Alone in the Universe – links to my published articles (pdf formats)

Here are links to my primary published articles about life in the universe based on the latest astronomical results on exoplanets, and the likelihood that humanity is alone for all practical purposes. I explore the implications of this conclusion in different contexts in these articles, as I summarize below.

  • Alone in the Universe – My first article about life appeared in the American Scientist magazine
  • Questioning Copernican Mediocrity –   This followup article discusses the cosmological import of the Anthropic Principle and the Misanthropic Principle, two dramatic conclusions from modern physics and astronomy, in the context of our probably being alone in the universe. It also appeared in the American Scientist magazine.
  • Alone in the Universe  – This article appeared in the journal Zygon and unlike the earlier articles goes into detail about the religious significance and historical background of the notions of aliens in the universe, in particular as seen in the Bible and by ancient, medieval and modern Jewish philosophers.
  • The End of Copernican Mediocrity –  This book chapter from 2019 updates and expands on the arguments in the original American Scientist article of the same title.  It appeared in the book, Our Common Cosmos: Exploring the Future of Theology, Human Culture and Space Sciences, Lehmann and Losch, Ed. (T&T Clark)
